This week, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra marks two historic milestones: the ASO's diamond anniversary season, and Beethoven at 250. Spotlighting the Orchestra's world-class artistry, the ASO presents Beethoven's watershed contribution to the violin world, his Violin Concerto featuring Concertmaster David Coucheron. Also on the program, Robert Spano leads a parade of ASO soloists in the "sheerly enjoyable orchestral showpiece" [Gramophone] Concerto for Orchestra by Witold Lutosławski.
Also on the program, Two Organa by composer Oliver Knussen, whose relationship with Music Director Robert Spano and the ASO spanned two decades and six original compositions. Knussen's work gives insightful, fresh interpretations of the core classical repertoire that he loved, and Maestro Spano wishes to dedicate these performances to Oliver Knussen's memory.
