BERLIOZ: Symphonie fantastique, op. 14

Additional Information

Soprano Tamara Wilson and bass-baritone Ryan McKinny—two Aspen alumni turned opera stars—bring their vocal magic to the Benedict Music Tent for the final concert of the Festival’s season.

Wilson sings Brünnhilde and McKinny sings Wotan in scenes from Die Walküre, the second of four operas that make up Wagner’s Norse mythology–based Ring cycle. Both singers are known for their Wagner interpretations; in 2012 Wilson sang the role of the fairy queen Ada in a concert version of Wagner’s first complete opera, Die Feen, presented by Oper Frankfurt, and in 2016 McKinny made his Bayreuth Festival debut singing Amfortas in the opera Parsifal.

Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique—the first of the composer’s four symphonies—gives a final nod to the season’s Paris theme. Although Berlioz revised the work after its premiere at the Paris Conservatory in 1830 and later downplayed its narrative nature, he initially said that the symphony conveys the hallucinations of a highly imaginative musician who tries to poison himself with opium in order to cope with the deep despair of unrequited love.
